It should be obvious from this that what a field geologist can do in a few minutes, it takes the rover many days to do. But in the end, we had a flow chart for how we “do geology,” and the rovers could simply follow that routine. Armed with this hindsight, it is now hard to laugh at anything that someone from outside your particular specialty might say. They may just have a better perspective on your goals than you do. They may be addressing an element of what you do that you have taken for granted, but really have not clarified. This perhaps illustrates yet another example of what interdisciplinary work is all about and why it generally works so well and generates such useful new insights and results. Sometimes that other perspective allows users to open the hood on a convention and do some hot-rodding.
